LITERACY CENTRE ACTIVITIES
This link will take you to the Florida Centre for Reading Research Instructional materials for teachers page.
Here you will find many great games and activities for:
Phonological awareness
Phonics
Fluency
Vocabulary
Comprehension
A consideration for literacy games and activities! Setting up literacy centres in your classroom is an excellent way for children to learn. Games and activities engage children in repeated rehearsal and use of new skills and knowledge in an enjoyable social context (far better than worksheets). However there are issues to note. Firstly, young children need to be taught to work in groups and need to be taught how literacy centres work in classrooms. (There is a video to watch on this website about this. It states that this takes at least six weeks at the beginning of the year to set this up properly so the learning is productive.) Secondly and most importantly, the literacy skills, strategies and knowledge must be taught clearly and explicitly first, using lots of modeled and shared work prior to expecting children to use those skills in games and activities. Once you've considered these issues carefully in your classroom then literacy learning centres full of the games and activities on this website will be a very productive learning space in your classroom (not to mention fun!!)

The Primary English Teaching Association Australia (PETAA) has a great website where you can get some ideas on how to use children's literature in classrooms.
You need to be a paid member of the association to gain full access but they have a number of 'samples' that you can view for free.
Go to: http://www.petaa.edu.au and look for teaching resources tab.
